History

History is a wonderful subject that allows children at our school to ignite their curiosity and excitement and to want to learn about the past. At OLI, the history curriculum is designed to enable all children to progressively build upon their knowledge and development of skills from EYFS through to Upper KS2.

We aim to equip children with passion, interest and a concrete understanding of the subject so that they want to further their learning and are clearly able to explain how a diverse range of people used to live on a local, national and global level. We aim for them to develop this understanding so they are able to see that History is all around them and is relevant to the ever-changing world.

OLI is surrounded by a rich local history and we embrace this both in KS1 and KS2 through local studies of Tolworth and Hampton Court Palace whilst also linking it to several wider studies such as Surbiton during The Blitz.

Children are taught History in a variety of ways to enthuse and scaffold learners to build upon their knowledge and skills so they can find out about the past. We use a range of learning approaches to build historical knowledge, skills and cultural capital including visits, workshops, artefacts and interactive group activities to enhance children’s learning.
